It's been a very long time - roughly two years - since a new BIOnighT
album hit the net. There are two main reasons for this: number one, my new
dayjob has been killing me and I haven't been able to adjust, yet. Number
two, FaBIO and I had another one of our black periods when we get very
close to splitting and bringing our friendship to an end. I'm sure I'm not
saying anything new to most of you when I say that the two of us are
deeply different, with different ideologies, values, needs, parameters,
and just about anything you can think of, and that makes things pretty
tough at times. The one thing we do have in common is the profound
friendship we share, and that's what - after the six months in 2008 during
which we hadn't seen each other, which had in turn been preceded by a very
long period of fights - allowed us to start everything anew (both
musically and, more importantly, personally) and resuscitate the album
that had remained unfinished and waiting on a shelf.
So here it is, at last: Resonance of the Spirit. It is, in fact, a bit
more spiritual (not in a religious sense, though) than the others, and
it's also peculiar in that we used some acoustic instruments for the first
time. FaBIO has been learning to play the zither for a couple of years
now, so we inserted that, while I added a Chinese bamboo flute and a
shameless vocal performance (no words, just a bunch of out-of-tune ooohs
and aaahs). It was supposed to be the tenth-anniversary album, but we were
just a bit too busy to finish it in time. Still, it does mark out tenth
year of music making, and that is kind of amazing.
Some of those who listened to it in advance say it's one of our best.
Personally, I don't know, as it's been in the making for too long for me
to be objective, but I sure hope so. All I know is that friendship can
overcome almost anything.
Thanks for reading,
Mac
