Here at Keyboard Central, Galactic Anthems’ grand, synth-orchestrated
project is a new one for us — a comic book soundtrack. Bringing to mind
Amin Bhatia’s Interstellar Suite, Semper Fidelity uses older instruments
like the Yamaha DX7 and E-mu Proteus 1 and 2, as well as soft synths like
Native Instruments Absynth and Atmosphere to create an engrossing soundscape
that’s majestic, fun, intense, and campy — in other words, perfect comic
book accompaniment. Speak of the devil, the enhanced CD comes with PDF files
of a full-color comic tale, created by sci-fi storyteller Matt Howarth.
Reading and listening simultaneously is an engaging, trippy experience for
sure. For crafting great mood music — and using it in a quirky,
entertaining context — Galactic Anthems (a.k.a. electronic artist Glenn
Adams) is Keyboard’s Unsigned Artist of the Month.

Hinter Galactic Anthems verbirgt sich der amerikanische Musiker Glenn
Adams. Ob es Zufall ist, dass Initialen und die Anfangsbuchstaben des
Pseudonyms übereinstimmen? Ich weiß es nicht, jedenfalls ist dieser Mann
nicht wirklich ein Newcomer, denn 'semper fidelity' ist bereits sein
sechstes Album. Geboten wird rhythmische Synthesizer-Musik, die mal
experimentell-soundtrackartig, dann wieder recht bombastisch-melodiös,
fast hymnenartig daherkommt (wie das Pseudonym des Artisten ja schon
sagt).
Die meisten Tracks bewegen sich im 5-Minuten-Bereich, lediglich 'the
campaign to Liberate Ferris' ragt spielzeittechnisch gesehen mit knapp 10
½ Minuten heraus. Den flotten Titeln liegt oft das gleiche Strickmuster
zugrunde, so dass sie ähnlich klingen und mir etwas die Abwechslung fehlt
und ich zu Albummitte hin den Eindruck einer gewissen Eintönigkeit nicht
abstreiten kann. Die atmosphärischen Parts gefallen mir besser, daher
steigert sich das Album für meinen Geschmack im letzten Drittel wieder
deutlich, speziell 'the fensi largo' hat es mir angetan. Insgesamt ein durchschnittliches Elektronikalbum. Begleitend ist
als Bonus auf der CD noch ein Comic von Matt Howarth mit gleichnamigem
Titel enthalten, das in Gestalt von mehreren PDF-Dateien aufzurufen ist.
