Deep Imagination is Thorsten Sudler-Mainz and Thorsten Rentsch’s Art of
Infinity musical harmonizes. If Art of Infinity offers a spacey ambient
music, with a more progressive approach, Deep Imagination is more
electronic, while preserving this prog art which dissociates the German
duet from the conventional path of EM. This 2nd opus, Gemstones, proposes
a collection of tracks recorded live and remixes of the 1st CD, Scapes
(released in 2005), thus 2 new tracks (Planetary System and Gemstones)
which shows the interconnection between Sudler-Mainz and Rentsch’s
musical projects.
A heavy reverberation splits up in sequences electronic pulsations,
initiating an echotic tempo with fine syncopate jolts. Behind a variegated
and very electronic structure, Planetary System succeed to release a
wandering melodious approach in a zombiesque cosmos, coat of a synth to
crystalline keys which curves harmoniously a dark and lethal universe.
With Sunscape we plunge in the gliding universe of Scapes. The movement
floats on low pulsations and a drift synth which wraps us of a vaporous
atmosphere. Flirting with a psychedelic era, the musical prisms
scintillate on random percussions. Colourscape offers a nervous sequential
rhythm which deviates on a more ventilate structure, even funky, before
concluding on a more ambient phase, where synth drifting waves cross a
solitary saxophone with ethereal breaths. This soft romantic mood
continues with the superb Mountainscape. A dense and enveloping track,
which waltz delicately on a harmonious synth which howsl over chords of a
melancholic sensitivity. This is great poignant space music whose
nostalgic breaths soak in an atmosphere very close to Pink Floyd on Wish
you Where Here, just like Moonscape and Mindscape. Quite simply beautiful.
The introduction of New Horizon offers this same structure, except that
the title becomes vigorous in the 2nd portion with fine echotic pulsations
and good percussions which hammer a sensual tempo. Gemstones starts under
a heavy electronic cawing whose reverberations die in a cavernous
environment. Sequences pulsations propel this strange underground world
with stalactites sonorities. Hypnotic beat, without harmony, which
modifies its tuneful approach with the arrival of the 2nd part. Flexible
choirs, sequences fluid and more limpid gird of a circular synth and a
lonely saxophone. We are swimming in the harmoniously cold world of Robert
Schroëder. The 3rd part moderates its gradually lilting approach in order
to slide in an ambient sphere, where everything converges towards a
heteroclite and atonic universe on vaporous and mysterious mellotron
synths.
I have to admit that Gemstones is not an easy opus. It is a progressive
work which requires some listenings and each one arise a formerly
misunderstood passage; sign of an album which teem of agreeable surprises.
A fine album of progressive EM, where melodies enchant the nebulous
atmospheres. Gemstones also comes with a short 20 minutes DVD, presenting
a superb animate psychedelic life version of Planetary System and an
extract of the group in concert (Colourscape and Mountainscape) at Satzvey
Castle in 2005.

This release from 2008 offers 60 minutes of
dreamy electronic music on the CD.
Deep Imagination is: Thorsten Sudler-Mainz (on keyboards and programming),
with Thorsten Rentsch (on guitar, bass, keyboards, and percussion), and
Stefan Hollering (on saxophones).
The CD features a selection of unreleased tracks (from 2007), live
performances (from 2005) and a pair of remixes (from 2005) of pieces from
earlier albums.
The electronics are airy and buoyant over a foundation of moody
atmospherics. Keyboard driven riffs flicker through a host of cyclic
chords, establishing melodies that exhibit a smoldering strength laced
with a dreamy appeal. A variety of moods are captured and distributed
throughout the pieces, blending growling resonance and piercing tones with
pacific textures, all conspiring to superbly convey an uplifting attitude
of inspiring wonder.
Some of the tracks feature rhythms, guitar, and saxophones, tastefully
fleshing out the sound into an alluring density. The percussion lends more
of a background presence than any strident propulsion, flavoring the tunes
with soft tempos that are immersed in the electronic flow. The guitar is
well hidden in the mix, often confining itself to relaxed strumming. The
mournful cries of the saxophone are devoid of any sadness, communicating
an earnest yearning instead, a longing that is amply satiated by the rest
of the music.
While steeped in soothing sensibilities, these compositions possess a
dramatic flair that serves to invigorate without straying into hyperactive
territory. A sense of wonder is imparted with each melody, as the tunes
seep into the listeners’ flesh and then unfurl their commanding
influences from an internal vantage.
The DVD (which appears to be in PAL format) offers 21 minutes of material.
First, there’s a video of two of the tracks from the CD, live at Satzvey
Castle in 2005; and then there’s an abstract video whose visuals are
sourced from a live performance at EM-Breakfast in Dusseldorf in 2005.

Während der Arbeit am dritten Art Of Infinity-Album haben Thorsten
Sudler-Mainz und Thorsten Rentsch die zweite Scheibe ihres
Ambient-Projekts Deep Imagination fertig gestellt.
Obwohl sie zwei brandneue Songs, vier Live-Tracks und zwei Remixe enthält,
wirkt sie durchaus homogen. Natürlich sind da erneut ausladende, wabernde
Synthie-Flächen, doch können die Stücke weitaus mehr als nur
Entspannung stimulieren. „Planetary System“ eröffnet mit pulsierenden
Klängen, denen fast kontrapunktisch asiatisch tönende elektronische
Trommelklänge entgegengehalten werden. In „Colourscape“ durchbricht
ein elektrisch verstärktes Sax die marschierenden Sequenzer und kreiert
floydige Atmos. Das „New Horizon“-Medley spielt ganz ungeniert mit dem
berühmten „Shine On You Crazy Diamond“-Intro und man verlässt den
reinen Ambient zugunsten klassischer Elektronik in der Tradition von
Tangerine Dream und Software.
Mit dem dreiteiligen „Gemstones“ schließlich, gelingt das Kunststück,
meditative Kraft mit immenser elektronischer Intensität zu koppeln.
Spannender kann Space-Ambient kaum sein. (Die DVD bietet einen „Burg
Satzvey“-Livemitschnitt)

Das Projekt Deep Imagination ist tief in der elektronischen Musikszene
verwurzelt, hier geht es im Gegensatz zu Art of Infinity rein instrumental
zu, wobei logischerweise die Synthesizer die Hauptrolle spielen.
'Gemstones' ist ein zusammengestückeltes Album, das aus Live- wie auch
Studioaufnahmen besteht. Doch die Klangqualität der Livesongs ist dermaßen
gut und die Auswahl und Zusammenstellung der Titel derart passend, dass
alles wie aus einem Guss wirkt. Der 8-Minuten Opener 'Planetary System'
ist der einzige Titel, auf dem Sudler-Mainz solo agiert, in allen anderen
Songs wird er – wie schon bei Art of Infinity – von Thorsten Rentsch
an Gitarre, Bass, Percussion und Tasteninstrumenten unterstützt. Hinzu
kommt Saxophonist Stefan Höllering, der auf insgesamt 6 der 10 Titel mit
einem elektronisch manipulierten Saxophon sowie einem Tenorsaxophon eine
besondere Klangfärbung hinzu gibt und den Titeln ein besonderes Flair
verpasst. Auch hier wird angesichts von Synthies und Saxophon gelegentlich
ein wenig an Pink Floyd erinnert. Was mich an Deep Imagination tatsächlich
fasziniert, ist das wirklich hervorragend abgestimmte Zusammenspiel der
Musiker. Hier werden richtig schöne, abwechslungsreiche Klanggebilde
erzeugt, mal sehr ruhig, wie im sehr an Kitaro erinnernden 'Moonscape',
mal recht voluminös, meist mit sehr warmen Klangfarben ausgestattet. Sie
schaffen es, auf voller Spiellänge für mich interessant zu bleiben.
Dabei sind vier Songs live eingespielt, jeweils zwei vom Burg Satzvey
Konzert 2005 bzw. vom EM Breakfast in Düsseldorf. Darunter ist ein Song
ein Medley eines Titels der oben erwähnten Art of Infinity. Zwei weitere
sind Remixe vom 2005er Album Scapes, die restlichen 5 Songs wurden im
Jahre 2007 eingespielt und waren bisher unveröffentlicht.
Als Bonus gibt es eine DVD Version, die die 2 Satzvey Castle 2005
Ausschnitte als Filmsequenz plus 2 weitere Songs mit Hintergrundbildern
enthalten. Eine sehr runde, lohnenswerte Sache, gefällt mir sehr gut!
